K: Know the writing format of a playscript.
U: Understand the difference between a playscript and a comic.
D: Do a simple playscript from a comic.

Words of the Day
1. Playscript
2. Plot bunny

Let's Recap

5 Features of Playscript
1. Characters - The people/animals/animated objects of the story.
2. Dialogues - Spoken words from characters. Does not use speech marks.
3. Stage Directions - Actions of the characters.
4. Acts (plot) - Scenes (setting) - Act is the plot sequence. Scene is the time and place of story.
5. Narrator - The person who tells the story. Has dialogues of their own.

Plot Sequence (Act)

Act 1 is exposition/introduction - Introduces the characters, scenes, and parts of the story.

Act 2 is rising action - Slowly builds up tension or problems and introduces conflict.

Act 3 is climax - The most intense part/moment of the story.

Act 4 is falling action - Problem is slowly being solved. The story is almost ending.

Act 5 resolution/ending - Problem is often solved. Story ends.

Can be either a 5-act or 3-act.

Task Time 1

Click on this script. In 5 minutes, find out its playscript features and plot sequences. In the next 5 minutes, let's discuss :)

Task Time 2

Please refer to your textbook, page 55 for today's task/homework. Remember the comic you did on page 54? Time to turn that into a script!

Remember to write your script in your Composition book! Do not forget to write the day and date.

Let's look at Ms Farah's Example

You are free to follow Ms Farah's style of playscript. But remember to write your own setting and dialogues!

Friends Who Stick Together, Get Soaked Together
by Ms Farah

Characters
Alexa: Asian girl. Has long black hair. Always wears glasses. Has a mean sense of humour.
Sabina: Caucasian girl. Has medium blonde hair. Gets angry quite easily.

(A beach. It is a sunny day. Two girls walk side by side on a pier. Sabina and Alex are eating and enjoying their ice-cream. Alexa happily eats her ice-cream. Sabina realizes a flock of seagulls nearby the pier.)

Alexa: Mmmm! I love this flavour!
Sabina: (Points at the seagulls) Those seagulls look hungry!

(Suddenly, one of the seagulls fly down and steal Sabina's ice-cream.)

Sabina: What the what! (Shouts) Hey, that's my ice-cream, you jerks!

(Sabina starts to stomp close to the edge of the pier, not realizing the wave that is splashing in her direction.)

Alexa: Sabina, wait! (She moves one foot forward but stops) Watch out!

(Sabina stops by the edge of the pier, but the wave hits her with a huge splashing sound. Sabina is now soaked.)

Sabina: Oh. (Gasps) My God. This is my favourite shirt! (She stands in one place and her arms stretch to the sides)
Alexa: (Laughs and points at Sabina) I'm so sorry but that was so funny! You look like a wet doll!

(Alexa continues to laugh at her annoyed friend, not realizing another wave that is now aiming towards her.)

---------------------

(An hour has passed. Sabina and Alexa now stand near a juice stall. Both girls are drenched, but seem happy.)

Sabina: Well, guess we're both wet dolls now, huh. (Laughs)
Alexa: (Laughs) Yeah! But at least we got our favourite juice drinks! I guess friends who stick together, get soaked together.

(The two girls laugh together and enjoy their drinks.)

(End)

Ta-da! Can you see the differences between a comic and a playscript? Do you see the features in Ms Farah's playscript? Can you identify the plot sequences that exist in the script?

Now it's your turn to make a script! This is due next Monday (9/11). Do take a picture of your work and submit it on Schoology. Use your creative thinking skills to create a simple, fun story!

Can't wait to read your version of the story!
