Comments

  1. A

2 Murete went to fetch the bicycle.

1 Saruni paid Murete for the bicycle.

4 Murete and Yeyo returned the money.

3 The bicycle was stacked high.

    B

    1. Which of the following words would you use to describe Saruni's character?

    Considerate, ambitious, and determined.

    2. List some words and phrases to describe the setting in the extract.

'The next afternoon' means it happened in the afternoon, and 'I came out of the house' implies it happened outside.

    3. Describe how Saruni's feelings change during the extract.

At first, he was disappointed because he did not have enough money to buy the bicycle. Then he was surprised as Murete turned up at the door with an orange pikipiki (motorcycle). Then he was confused because he hadn't told Murete about his money box. Finally he was excited when he realized he was getting his own bicycle.

    C

    1. The setting isn't really described in much detail in this extract. Write a paragraph to describe how you picture the scene. Think about what can be seen in the surroundings, what the characters look like, the weather, sounds.

It is a sunny day, very warm. Birds are chirping in and chipmunks are scurrying up and down the trees. There is not a cloud in sight. The dark-skinned Saruni with his equally dark-skinned parents, Murete and Yeyo, are outside talking to one another. They are all looking happy.

    2. The extract ends with Saruni wishing his mother didn't have to carry such a heavy load on her head. Think about what you know of Saruni's character. What do you think he wants to do next? Discuss your ideas with a partner.

Saruni will learn how to ride his motorbike/bicycle perfectly. Once he is very good at it and gets really strong, he will help his mom by carrying her load on his bike.
