  1. Sample Answers:

    1a. Comparison below:

North Pole - Arctic Ocean. Coldest is -18C. Has tundra and visible trees. Some mammals like polar bears and wolves. There are native people.

South Pole - Antarctica. Coldest is -50C, being the coldest. No tundra and visible trees. No mammals but has penguins. No native people.

    1b. All facts.

1c. Literal. It means that the North Pole is the northernmost point of the Earth's axis while the South Pole is the southernmost point of the Earth's axis.

    1d. Figurative expressions below:

Cold - It's a freezer out here! It's an igloo in here. I was left out in the cold. As cold as a dog's nose.
Hot - I'm burning up! Hot as a firecracker. It's the Dog Days of Summer! It's boiling in here! The weather is hot as an oven.

1e. Better to use facts because figurative relies on NOT to be taken literally. Facts rely on factual, literal content.

2a. Please refer to the sentences in 1b:

2a1. 'and' to show similar content.
2a2. 'because' to show reason. 'while' to show opposing content.
2a3. 'whereas' to show opposing content.
2a4. 'but' to show opposing content.
2a5. 'however' to show opposing content.
2a6. 'although' to show opposing content.
    2a7. No connective.

2aa. (Try and rewrite the sentence by changing a different connective)

    2b1. whether - or
    2b2. both - and
2b3. not only - but also
    2b4. either - or
    2b5. neither - nor
