A. Sport & Community

Sport is one of the Commonwealth’s most powerful shared languages.

1. With the Commonwealth Games returning to Glasgow in 2026, write about how sport brings people together across communities, cultures, or generations.

Text type - Informational essay (Non-fiction)

POV - 3rd-person

Introduction - What is sport? What is unity especially when it comes to sport?

Topic sentence 1 - What is a community? Is it like Malaysian community? How does sport unite communities?

Topic sentence 2 - What is culture? For example: Malaysian has 2 main cultures: Malay, Chinese, Indian. How does sport unite cultures?

Topic sentence 3 - What is generation? For you kids, you are Generation Alpha. For most of your teachers, they are Boomers and Millennials. How does sport unite generations?

Conclusion - Write 'In conclusion...'. Write short 1-2 sentences about how sports really do bring people together.

 

2You move to a new place and join a sports team or volunteer group to meet new people. What happens next, who do you meet, and what common ground do you share?

Text type - Modern story (Fiction)

POV - 1st-person

Narrative tense - Past or present 

Introduction - Where did you move? How was the new place? How did you feel when you moved? Where you sad? Happy? Indifferent?

Climax - Who was the new sports team/volunteer group that you met? How did you meet them? Where did you meet them?

Ending - What do you and the new team have in common? Do you feel confident with the new team? 

 

B. Culture: Food, Music & Hobbies

1. Someone from another Commonwealth country knocks on your door. They ask you to share one food or song that represents where you come from. What do you choose, how do you share it, and what happens between you?

Text type - Modern story (Fiction)

POV - 1st-person

Narrative tense - Past or present 

Introduction - What were you doing before the someone comes? Did you invite them in? Did you have a talk in the front yard?

Climax - You explain to the guest about a food or song that represents where you're from. What is it? Do you enjoy the food/song? When was the first time you experienced it?

Ending - How do you share your experience? Is it with friends at school? If food, do you cook it to share? If song, do you show or perform it?

 

2. Write about a hobby, creative interest, or passion of your own. How does it connect you to other people, either locally or across the Commonwealth.

Text type - Informational essay (Non-fiction)

POV - 1st-person

Introduction - Choose a hobby, creative interest, or passion. What kind of hobby/interest/passion is it? How many times do you indulge in it? 

Topic sentence 1 - Explain the hobby/interest/passion. When did you start indulging in it? Do you have some samples of your hobby/interest/passion?

Topic sentence 2 - How does this help connect with people? If you love writing, did you meet someone who loves drawing too? Did you share drawings with each other?

Conclusion - Write 'In conclusion...'. Write short 1-2 sentences about how your hobby/interest/passion did connect you with other people.

 

C. Protecting the Environment & Our Natural World

1Think of a place in nature that is important to your community. Write about why it matters to people and how caring for it together helps create common ground.

Text type - Persuasive essay (Non-fiction)

POV - 2nd-person & 3rd-person 

Introduction - What is nature? What is the most famous nature preservation place?

Topic sentence 1 - How is protecting nature important for people? Trees provide oxygen and humans need oxygen. Nature helps provide food for humans too.

Topic sentence 2 - Nature is important for animals. If there are no animals, humans have no food sources. New generation also lose the opportunity to learn and protect the rare animals in nature.

Topic sentence 3 - Protecting nature helps people be better people. It also helps provide a better future for others. 

Conclusion - Write 'In conclusion...'. Write short 1-2 sentences about why it matters to people and how caring for it together helps create common ground.

 

2. From plastic clean-ups to tree planting, people all over the Commonwealth are working for the common good of our natural environment. Imagine a time where sustainable choices shape every part of daily life. Describe a day in this world.

Text type - Persuasive essay (Non-fiction)

POV - 2nd-person & 3rd-person 

Introduction - What is sustainable choice? What is daily life?

Topic sentence 1 - List some sustainable choices like recycling. How does recycling help in your daily life? For example: if we recycle, we have less litter. 

Topic sentence 2 -  What about tree-planting? What are the benefits if we plan trees? Will we have more resources from the trees?

Conclusion - Write 'In conclusion...'. Write short 1-2 sentences where sustainable choices shape every part of daily life.

 

D. Shared Identity, Responsibility & Common Ground

1.  One night, students from all Commonwealth countries find themselves trapped inside an enormous library. The books will only let them leave if they create a new Commonwealth Charter. What would this charter say, and how would it help countries work together in the future?

Text type - Fantasy or Modern story (Fiction)

POV - 3rd-person

Narrative tense - Past or present 

Introduction - Who is the main character of the story? From which country did they come from? Exactly how many students were there and from which countries? Was the place magical?

Climax - How did the protagonist and the rest work together to make the new Commonwealth Charter? What are the values that they decide? Why did they decide to have them in the charter?

Ending - Was the new charter made on time? Did the students escape?

 

2. Write about a time, either real or imagined, when you realised you had far more in common with another living being (could be human, animal, plant) than you previously thought.

Text type - Diary writing (Fiction)

POV - 1st-person

Narrative tense - present

Introduction - What is the living being? Are they real? Are they fake?

Climax - What do you and the being have in common? Is it physical similarities? Do you share the same behaviour and personality?

Ending - Even though you have some things in common, do you get along well?

 

E. Language, Human Connection & Understanding

1. Across the Commonwealth, recent advances in digital technology have created new opportunities for connection, while also highlighting what remains uniquely human. What can people contribute that technology can never replace, and why is human connection still vital within diverse Commonwealth communities?

Text type - Persuasive essay (Non-fiction)

POV - 3rd-person

Introduction - What is digital advancement? How has it help benefit the Commonwealth community?

Topic sentence 1 - For humans, we have emotions and common sense. How do humans use logical thinking while making sure to be empathic and sympathetic in situations?

Topic sentence 2 -  Since humans are more diverse and emotional, humans can form bonds with others. Technology cannot form emotional bonds. When humans bond, even the more diverse people can be together.

Conclusion - Write 'In conclusion...'. Write short 1-2 sentences about how human connection still vital within diverse Commonwealth communities.

 

2. Within the Commonwealth, shared languages exist alongside and intermingled with many other national languages and local dialects. How does shared language create connection while still allowing space for difference and creativity?

Introduction - What is language? In your country, what are the most common languages used?

Topic sentence 1 - Even when the languages are different, how does it connect people? For example: do people share the same hobby that helps them connect?

Topic sentence 2 -  How do people be creative even with different languages? For example: people can show off their cultural dances which might share some similarities.

Conclusion - Write 'In conclusion...'. Write short 1-2 sentences about how shared language create connection while still allowing space for difference and creativity.
