Let's Begin!

Do you remember what a news report is?

News report - Share important information with people about what is going on in the world.

Features of a News Report

1. Headline

- The title

- A short, simple sentence of the main event.

- First letter of each word is capitalized (10-Year-Old Gets Driver's License)

2. Introduction

- Write a short summary about the main event.

- Use the 5W1H to figure out what to add in the context (Who is involved? Where did the event happen?)

3. Moments before the main event

- What happened before the main event?

- Use the 5W1H again to help you.

- Did anything happen that led to the main event happening?

4. The main event

- It has more detail than the headline and introduction.

- Goes in order as to what happened and how it happened.

- Usually in 1 or 2 paragraphs.

5. Events after the main event

- What was the conclusion after the event? (If there was an accident/tragedy, was anyone saved? If there was some sort of festival/event, when will the next event be?)

News Report Writing Style

  • 5W1H

The first paragraph should contain all of the 5Ws - what, where, when, who and why.

  • Clear paragraphs

Each paragraph should give more detail about the story and be presented in a clear way.

  • Direct and indirect/reported speech

Can be used to show the what other people have said about the story.

  • Facts

Facts or statistics can be used to support your points and avoid using your own opinion.

  • Formal language

Avoid chatty, friendly language in your report as it should be written to inform.

  • Third person

Newspaper reports are written in the third person using the names of those involved and pronouns such as ‘he’, ‘she’ or ‘they’.

  • Past tense

The main part of the report should be written in the past as the event has already happened.

Task 1

In your test pad, write a news report about a girl who got stuck in a tree while trying to save a cat that was also stuck in a tree.

Your word count should be at least 200 words.

You have 30 minutes for this task.
