Let's Begin!

Prepare your Composition exercise book (the tall brown book). Ensure that the cover has your name, title (Composition), and class.

On the first page, write the day and date, and the words of the day.

Afterwards, you will be getting a sample of a formal letter. Paste this sample on the first page (or on the second page if there is lack of space).

Task 1

Let's look at features of a formal letter. By using your pen, write down the features in your exercise book.

1. Include your name and contact information

Put your address in the top right corner.

2. Add the date

Write the date below the writer's address. Ensure the month is written in words.

3. Include the recipient's name and address

Place the recipient's address on the left.

4. Choose the right greeting (salutation)

If you do not know their name, use "Dear Sir" or "Dear Madam". Keep a formal tone.

5. Create the body of your letter

  • Write the title on the left side after "Dear...'
  • Be concise and relevant: Stick to the core purpose.
  • Avoid informal language: Maintain a formal, respectful tone.
  • Aim for three or four paragraphs: Each paragraph should have a clear aim.

  • 6. Close with a formal sign-off.

  • Use "Yours sincerely" if you know the recipient's name.
  • Use "Yours faithfully" if you do not.

  • 7. Add signature

Sign your signature and then write your first and last name.

    8. Proofread!

Reading your finished letter from top to bottom helps catch spelling or grammatical errors.
